As car modification and upgrading become more and more popular, more and more riders will join in, and car modification will gradually become rational. So how can you modify a set of beautiful rims that are suitable for your daily use?
What should we pay attention to when upgrading rims?
First, the PCD (bolt hole) of the new rim must be the same as the original, otherwise it cannot be loaded. For example, Audi’s is 5×112, Mercedes Benz’s is 5×112, BMW’s is 5×120, Ford’s is 5×108, Toyota’s is 5×114.3, etc;
Second, the offset(ET)value of the new rim, which is a movable value, has different requirements for each vehicle model, and the personalized selection is relatively strong, but it should be similar to the original (generally speaking, the original vehicle ET+5~the original vehicle ET-10 is a relatively suitable range);
Third, the center hole of the new rim should be the same as or larger than the original one. If the center hole is larger than the original one, the corresponding reducer ring (also called the center collar) shall be added. The use of reducing ring does not affect the safety of the rim, because the central hole of the rim is not stressed. However, if the machining accuracy of the reducer ring is not high enough, it may affect the loading accuracy of the rim;
Fourth, the outer diameter of the tire after the rim upgrade should be basically the same as the original, and the change should not exceed 3%;
Fifth, the rim shall not be too large or too wide. Generally, it is appropriate to upgrade the rims to 1-2 inches, and some models can upgrade to 3 inches. If the rims are too large, the tires will be thinner. On the one hand, it will affect the comfort of the car. On the other hand, the tires are expensive and have a short life. If the rims are too wide, the corresponding tires are also wide, which increases fuel consumption on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is possible that the front wheels may rub the car body when cornering.
Sixth, pay attention to whether the bolts/nuts need to be replaced and the corresponding bolt wrenches; Because the original wheel is a large bolt hole, while the modified wheel is basically a small bolt hole. In addition, the original wheels of some cars are spherical bolt holes, while the modified wheels are generally tapered bolt holes.
Seventh, the car owner who changes the brake should pay attention to whether there is interference between the rim and the brake when changing the rim. Before purchasing the rim, be sure to confirm it or consult the seller.
Eighth, about lightweight rim and unsprung weight, lightweight is a development trend of wheel rims, but the premise is to ensure safety, which is the same as cars. Cars are also pursuing lightweight, but the premise is that safety cannot be reduced.
There is a saying in the rim industry that European rims are for quality, American rims are for style, and Japanese rims are for appearance. It means that the European market pays the most attention to the safety of rims, the American market pays the most attention to the style of rims, and the Japanese market pays the most attention to the appearance of rims. Another feature is that in the Japanese after-sales market, the weight of the rim is much lighter than that in Europe, which is similar to that of the whole car.
